Lutyens, Emily

(nee Lytton) (1874-1964). Prominent supporter of J. Krishnamurti and international lecturer for the Theosophical Society (TS). Lady Emily Lutyens was born in 1874, the daughter of Robert Lytton, a former Viceroy of India who became 1st Earl of Lytton. In 1897, she married Edwin Landseer Lutyens; it was a romantic marriage which served to enhance the career of her husband, an eminent architect.

Lutyens followed J. Krishnamurti from the time she first met him in May 1911 to 1929 when Krishnamurti renounced his role as a vehicle for the World Teacher. Her devotion to the Krishnamurti cause placed considerable strain on her marriage, but she was able to persuade her husband to design the new headquarters for the Theosophical Society in London.
