Mistral, Gabriela

(1889-1957). Pseudonym of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, Chilean poet and member of the Theosophical Society (TS) in that country. She won the Nobel prize for literature in 1945. Her prize winning Sonetos de la Muerte, (“Sonnets of Death”) published in 1914 made her well-known. A love affair ended by the suicide of her lover inspired Dolor in the collection Desolación (1922). Her theosophical background is reflected in her devotion to the downtrodden, children, nature and God which always formed a major theme in her poetry. Her poetry has been translated into English, French, Italian, German and Swedish. She died on January 10, 1957, at Hampstead, N.Y., U.S.A.
